Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
