Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
