British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
