A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
